Chapter One Workshop

The first chapter of your novel or memoir does more work than any other element of a book. It makes the first impression on a reader, agent, publisher. It provides them with context for all to come, establishes your credibility as author, and determines whether they’re willing to follow you through the next two hundred pages or so of prose. In this class, each student will get an opportunity to workshop the first chapter their novel or memoir with a focus on craft issues such as opening lines, opening paragraphs, the first five pages, the first chapter as a map legend for the book, and the establishment of time, place, conflict, character, and voice. The class is appropriate for writers on their first draft to those of you ready to send your book out.
